Opening of the Exhibition Elsie at the Estevan Lodge of the Reford Gardens

For immediate release

Grand-Métis,  July 26, 2010.
The Reford Gardens opened the new exhibition Elsie by two artists from Métis-sur-Mer, Janis Gillan and Rasa Pavilanis, this afternoon at 4 pm, at the Estevan Lodge. This exhibition features 22 painting by the artists who spend their summers in Métis-sur-Mer.

Ms. Gillan’s still life paintings are inspired by photographs and objects found in the museum of Estevan Lodge, including items that belonged to Elsie Reford that she used during her many pastimes in Grand-Métis and include paintings of her favourite salmon-fishing flies, riding boots and suitcases.

The paintings by Rasa Pavilanis explore the equestrian side of Elsie Reford and her passion for horseback riding. An impressive canvas of 6 feet x 9 feet of Elsie seated on a magnificent steed is the centrepiece of the exhibition. As a young woman and mother, Elsie Reford was a passionate rider and she often went riding (sidesaddle) along the shoreline of the St. Lawrence or on the country roads throughout the region. Before the First World War, she twice organized expeditions to traverse the Gaspe Peninsula on horseback.

The Elsie exhibition runs until October 3, at Estevan Lodge of the Reford Gardens.

This is the second time that Elsie Reford directly inspired artists in their work presented at the Gardens. In 2006, Dominique Blain created Elsie - a tribute a permanent installation created in collaboration with the Musée régional de RImouski, featuring pictures of Elsie Reford at seven times in her life, in seven telescopes strategically located in the gardens.
